Illustration of the trigeminal nerve

The trigeminal nerve is the fifth cranial nerve and is responsible for sensory input from the face, as well as motor functions such as chewing. It has three branches: the ophthalmic nerve, the maxillary nerve, and the mandibular nerve. This nerve plays a crucial role in transmitting sensations such as touch, pain, and temperature from the face to the brain. Dysfunction of the trigeminal nerve can result in conditions such as trigeminal neuralgia, which causes severe facial pain. Illustrations of the trigeminal nerve often show its complex network of branches and connections throughout the face and head.
