Anatomy of the Cerebellum

The cerebellum is a part of the brain located at the back of the head, beneath the cerebral cortex. It plays a crucial role in coordinating voluntary movements, balance, and motor control. The cerebellum consists of two hemispheres connected by a structure called the vermis. It contains a highly folded surface with white matter in the center and grey matter on the outside. The cerebellum receives sensory information from the spinal cord and other parts of the brain, and it sends signals to the motor cortex to modulate muscle activity. Dysfunction of the cerebellum can lead to movement disorders, such as ataxia, tremors, and dysmetria.
